Japanese Papermaking in Asakusa!
This is a recorded version of a livestream from Mokuhankan in Asakusa Tokyo, on August 31, 2023.
Dave Bull and Ayano Okamura went to visit a nearby papermaking experience - Watashino - organized by a group of papermakers from Shikoku, who recently opened a shop near Sensoji Temple in Asakusa.
Dave and Ayano-san had a ton of fun making the paper and learning from the instructors, and happily recommend the experience to anyone visiting the area.
People in the video:
Dave Bull, owner of Mokuhankan
Ayano Okamura, staff member at Mokuhankan
Osamu Hamada, from family of papermakers in Kochi
Yasuhiro Nishimori, manager of Watashino

I think the word David was looking for towards the end of Part 2 is ‘flow’ - the flow of life, existence and being in a Taoist philosophy sense. I could be wrong and I’d been interested to know what others think but that’s what sprung to mind.

Interestingly, your idea of gathering prints from museums and private collections around the world is probably well suited for artificial intelligence analysis. It can probably quite quickly detect the differences and then assess the order in which they were probably carved and printed. Fascinating project.

Thank you so much for the info in this video. I loved how you pointed out that the artists of that time used cut and paste and other techniques when building their prints. I do the same thing when designing my lino prints. I cut things out from my sketchbook, reference photos, text samples, etc and paste them to a sheet of paper the same size as my linoleum block which allows me to test elements, move things around, see what works and what doesn't. You showed how my methods are similar to the great artists of the past, giving me a connection to them that if otherwise have no knowledge of. Thank you.

I feel like they function like postcards, t shirts, signs, posters, badges, and trading cards at a gift shop. A lot of US National park merch, is probably an analog. They feel like tourist, traveler, and collector merch. It's evidence that someone went on the travel or a memory from the travel. There's also escapism in it of course. Honestly, if you look at all the ideas that have come out of Japan in terms of art and products, wood blocks definitely feel like a major stepping stone.

The meaning of life took a big hit when Richard dockings route the selfish gene and also, through the discovery of many facts by evolutionary anthropologists and psychologists. Specifically, when it could be deducted with enough certainty that morality is an evolutionary result, We sort of lost faith in the fact that life would have on ulterior meaning. The existentialists, particularly Albert Camus, were pretty much on to it already. I find that perfecting some skill is my Sysiphus Temporary solution to this problem. I am not so sure what the solution would be for large numbers of People.
